Konrad Michalski spoke with Dr Puzyna – Chairman of St.Sophia Specialist Hospital
Your hospital is one of the most often recommended specialist centres when it comes down to childbirth. Why do you think it is now “fashionable” to give birth in St.Sophia Specialist Hospital?
It is not a matter of fashion, it is the recognition of the quality of our services by our patients which makes us
so popular – as of late, we have been recording 20 births per day on average. The number of babies that we deliver has been growing for a while now. In 2014 we delivered over 6600 children. We strive to provide a sense of warmth and safety in order to guarantee the best standard of care to all our patients. A large number of foreign patients recommend St.Sophia Specialist Hospital.
Could you tell us what kind of service can a foreign patient expect with regard to prenatal care and childbirth?
In the last 15 years we have had a pleasure to take care of 2500 foreign patients from 99 different countries,
including multiple patients from diplomatic posts based in Warsaw. We provide personalised service and assistance of English, French and Italian speaking staff to those foreign patients who wish to be under our care during pregnancy and delivery. We aim at making patients from abroad feel the same as if they were in their own countries, or even better and safer. All our foreign patients are treated like VIP’s.
For parents-to-be, who take into consideration even the worst case scenarios, it is crucial that their baby should be born in a place which guarantees the best quality health care – without the need to be transported to another hospital in case of a life threatening situation or other complications. What is it like in your hospital?
We deal with even the most complicated cases. There is an Intensive Therapy Unit for Newborns. We take into
our care premature babies and sick children born in other hospitals. The smallest baby that we saved weighed 460g. In 2014 we treated 112 premature babies weighing below 2000g. This year (up to the end of June) we welcomed to this world 66 pairs of twins and one set of triplets. Our standard of maternity healthcare is significantly higher than the national average.
On 1 June 2015 you were awarded the title of “Pain Free Hospital” and received a corresponding certificate. What does this mean for your patients?
It means that all patients of our Hospital can be sure that we will provide them with relevant pain relief options,
based on the current research and commonly accepted standards. The patients who go through labour have full access to epidural as a pain relief method, as well as many others. As the largest number of children born in Warsaw are delivered in St. Sophia Specialist Hospital, the waiting list must be very long.
Are you planning to enlarge the premises?
Yes, we are planning to expand in future. For now, however, we are happy to say we are coping well with numbers St.Sophia and we do not let the waiting list get any longer.
